Holidays in Formentera: what to do and what to see in 2022
If you've already booked your Ibiza Formentera boat to discover the smallest island of the Balearic Islands during your holidays, in today's article we're going to share with you the attractions and activities you can't miss.
Although this small Mediterranean paradise barely exceeds 80 square kilometres in size, there are many plans in Formentera to spend a fantastic day in the company of your partner, family or friends.
Shall we get started?
Sunbathing on the island's most paradisiacal beaches
As you know, the Sea Experience Ibiza boats that take you to Formentera disembark at the Port of La Savina. From there, some of the island's most stunning beaches and coves are within easy reach.
For example, Formentera's famous Ses Illetes beach is just a 15-minute bike ride away. It's a place you absolutely must visit: crystal-clear waters, fine sand and a unique natural environment. It would almost be a sin to leave without taking a dip...
At the same distance you can also enjoy Ses Roquetes, a cove in the eastern part of the island that is less frequented but of great beauty. Cala Saona, another popular beach (especially for snorkellers) located in the western part, is about 30 minutes away by bike.
Other beaches and coves not to be missed in Formentera are Es Migjorn, Ses Platgetes and Caló d'es Mort, which are located in the southwestern part. It may be better to go to these places by motorbike or car because of the distance, but they are well worth a visit anyway.
Visiting the lighthouses of La Mola and Cap de Barbaria
La Mola lighthouse in Formentera is probably one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island for several reasons. The peaceful atmosphere, the spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and its natural beauty are the main ones.
It is no coincidence that it is one of the most photographed places in Formentera... So you shouldn't miss it for anything in the world!
Cap de Barbaria is also very popular for those who enjoy a quiet Mediterranean sunset after a leisurely stroll along the narrow path that will take you to the enclave.
From here, you will also have very close access to the Cova Foradada ("holed cave"), literally a natural balcony with incredible views. Don't forget your camera!
Cycle along the roads and paths
It is very common for many tourists to cycle around the island of Formentera. And at Sea Experience we highly recommend it. It is a very peaceful, healthy and sustainable way to discover every corner of its geography.
However, bear in mind that the road leading to El Pilar de La Mola (the village you must pass through before reaching the lighthouse) and to the southern part of Formentera is quite steep. If you are not very fit, it might be better to make this journey by public transport, car or moped.
But beyond this area, the forests, villages and coves of Formentera are fully accessible on two wheels. So if you also want to make the most of your holidays to keep in shape, the smallest of the Pitiusas is an ideal destination.
Enjoy Formentera's Mediterranean gastronomy
Make a note of these delicious dishes: "bullit de peix" (typical fish stew accompanied by "arroz a banda"), fried eggs with lobster and fried octopus. These delicacies will make your mouth water even more when you are enjoying them overlooking the sea.
You can enjoy them in legendary establishments such as Sa Platgeta (in the Es Migjorn beach area), in the picturesque village of San Francisco Javier or in any of the restaurants along the Es Caló de Sant Agustí promenade.
The best plan for gastronomy lovers, without a doubt!
Get to know the charms of its villages, historical and natural heritage.
In the previous section we have already mentioned San Francisco Javier (or Sant Francesc Xavier), but you should also visit Es Pujols (very close to the port) and Sant Ferran, where you will find a multitude of typical bars and a family atmosphere
If we are talking about historical heritage, a visit to the megalithic tomb of Ca na Costa will not leave you indifferent. It is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Balearic Islands.
Finally, thanks to the Ses Salines Natural Park Interpretation Centre (the "Finca de Can Marroig"), you will be able to discover the natural heritage of the park in an interactive way, as well as the tradition of the "salineros" of the area.
We hope you enjoy your stay in Formentera!
