Ibiza turtles released

(Videos) 26 turtles born in Ibiza in 2019 released

Thanks to the work of almost a hundred volunteers and the Balearic Ministry of the Environment, last Wednesday, October 7, 2020, the 26 turtles that were born in Playa d'en Bossa in the summer of 2019 were released in Ibiza.

Of these, 6 of them will carry a satellite geolocation system to track their life in the open sea, as well as the evolution of the specimens. A fact that will surely help to protect this endangered species.

The dangers of climate change

Since the temperature of the sea is rising, these "Caretta Caretta" turtles are suffering the consequences of this global problem.

A direct effect results in the birth of about 90% of female specimens, since the sex of this species is determined by the temperature of the water.

This destabilization also translates into an increase in spawning at the national level. In total there have been 11, a real milestone.

Ibiza's turtles on local television

Next we leave you with the news gathered in the local television of Ibiza and Formentera (TEF) and in the public radio and television of the Balearic Islands (IB3):

Do you remember Ulises?

The passengers of our boat Ibiza-Formentera on July 8 last season witnessed a unique rescue.

Our staff spotted a turtle with swimming problems and notified the Vellmarí Diving Center team so they could assist the animal.

Luckily, Ulises (named after our vessel) was able to get rid of the plastic and fishing line that was choking her and become a free turtle again.

We tell you about it in our blog: The story of Ulises, the turtle rescued in the Pitiusas.
